How can I not be so scared of injections?

I am very scared of injections?

  • I havent had one for a long time now. I recently found out about an injection I need to have at school. I am really frightened! I can't look at the needle before or after or even look at someone else having an injection. I hate blood as well. I can stand a big nose bleed bit when it comes to a bloody knee or arm on me or anyone else I feel icky and queasy. One tv If there's real a&e on or my dad is on his laptop and has pics of operations the blood makes me shake. I am scared for the one that's not due until 2014. Last time I had one I broke down in tears. I have been told they don't hurt and I believe that but I'm still scared about it. U can literally bribe me with new shoes (:p) and I just won't budge. I know I sound arrogant but I am petrified and don't want one and I will literally do anything else. Btw I can't skip school cuz I'll just have it the next day and if not the next day etc. I am so freaked out by them. What can I do. Is there any way to get what u need from an injection without having one. Is there any way to not have one

  • Answer:

I actually love them I will watch them go in every time. If I was you I would tell your parents and get them to phone up the school and say that you don't want it. But do remember how lucky we are that we can get these jabs as there are people that don't get a chance and will die.

It's over so fast. Look the other way and bite down hard on something like rubber. Be sure to tell the nurse or whoever of your fears. You'll be fine.

What helps me is to not look at the needle. And I thought it is silly to worry about it. So don't worry about it!

Take someone in with you and when you sit or lie down, get them to sit on the opposite side to where the injection is going in. Make sure it is someone talkative and start talking together about a favourite pop star or tv programme to distract you. Look at them and not at what the nurse is doing. Before you know it, it will be over and done with. The thought of it is worse than the actual event.

I have to have blood tests, involving a needle in the arm, every 12 weeks, and have done so for the past 16 years. Apart from the fact that there is an insignificant sharp twinge when the needle goes in, that's about it. If you continue to tell yourself that it is just like a pin in the arm, which might sting a little, then what else is there to worry about? Your situation sounds more like a phobia, which can be treated by therapy. Why not check this out with your doctor and get some help. You can't go on burying your head in the sand and getting strung out when there would be help available.

i used to be like that too, i remember i had to get a shot when i was a little girl and i screamed and screamed! it got better but now i take lots of bloodtests and i don't look at the needle but at least i sit up instead of lying on the bed like i used to... i also had to give myself shots, couldnt do it my husband had to do it, and when i was pregnant i had to check my blood for sugar 6 times a day, and i did it and got over it! today i administered a shot to myself and i was fine! just don't look at the needle, have someone with you to hold your hand, a parent or good friend or sibling, and maybe you can lie down

You don't have to see the needle or the syringe. Before you go in, tell the nurse or the technician your fears. Ask if you can lay down because you feel faint (believe me...they will let you lay down). Laying down helps a lot. When you go in, don't look at the syringe. Look away. Look at the wall. And talk to them! Get a conversation going. When you talk, it's hard to be scared. You also need to remember that nurses and medical techs have seen every reaction possible with injections and drawing blood. There is nothing to be ashamed of. If you feel sick or you want to cry...tell them, ok? They need to know how you're feeling and what's going on. You'll be ok...just breathe, talk, tell them what's up, talk about your fears.
