Pressure under both ears when outside?

What is the best way to stop pressure in your ears when flying?

  • I am due to go on holiday soon but suffer really bad from pressure in my ears. It only happens when the plane starts to descend but it can take days for it to clear. Not only that but it really hurts my ears. Anyone got any suggestions, please.

Sucking on sweets is the best because it makes you swallow, which is what equalizes the pressure inside your ears with outside. You can just keep swallowing if you want, but I always feel a little stupid when I do that! Drinking water sometimes helps too for the same reasons! It's harder to get your ears to equalize when you have a cold so be prepared to eat more candy if you do! Happy travels!

Mine do the same so I use those ear plugs you can buy, the sponge type ones(don't push them into far like I did though otherwise they are hard to get out! lol) I also find sucking a boiled sweet helps. Hope that's a bit of help?

Simply equalise the pressure between your inner ear and the outside air. It is the pressure differential that causes the discomfort. Take in a breath of air. Close your mouth Pinch your nose closed Try and push the air out through your pinched closed nose. You might feel the movement in your ears. Thats it. Repeat if needed

There are special ear plugs - they look like blue screws - that they sell in the Chemists, including Boots at the airport. Put them in an hour before landing and you'll be fine. If this always happens, you've probably got a blocked Eustachian tube (that's the bit that joins your nose to the inside of your eardrum and equalises the pressure). A nasal rinse should help. I have exactly the same problem and have tried and tested loads of theories - ear plugs etc! I've found the best thing is to take a drink as the plane starts to descend, and keep on sipping throughout the descent. If that doesn't work and you can feel the pressure starting to build up, try sucking a boiled sweet or lolly.
