How to clear blocked ears from flying?

Ears blocking on aeroplanes any one know how to stop it?

  • The last few times I flew my ears blocked up and as I am flying further this time want to know how to stop it happening as a friend once had her eardrum burst while flying. I know about sipping water and about Olbas oil but any other suggestions? I tried to clear any wax out of my ear by using that oil specially for removing wax but my ear is still singing. I mean it is a little blocked now from the oil.

as you take off, hold you nose and blow gently. this will equalise the pressure in your ears to the changing pressure in the cabin and will stop your ears from popping.

It is not the distance you are flying, but the pressure changes within the skull sinuses. It is worse on takeoff and landing, than in level flight. Try a valsalva action. Pinch your nose and blow out hard with your mouth closed. That should equalise the pressure either side of the eardrum, you should hear them both "pop" before the pain gets too bad.

It is a question of pressure. When you suck a sweet and swallow, the small tube running from your inner ear to the back of your throat (Eustachian tube), opens to equalise pressure.

You can chew gum and yawn plus you can hold your nose and blow slowly to get rid of the pressure on take off and landing.

Take a sudafed just before takeoff. It will dry up any excess mucus in your ears and help with the pressure

You need to have a chewing gum in your mouth. When you feel a beep again, just gulp the water inside.
