What are some clever ways to keep in touch with friends?

Do you keep in touch with your friends while traveling?

• I am on a road trip, and while checking in with a friend I told her about how I had accidentally turned on this road that resulted in me taking an hour-long drive through this amazing dramatic visage of numerous mountains, lakes, farmland with grazing animals, and lush greenery. Her response? "Haha nice. Be careful." And then she proceeded to speak at length about how creeped out she was that some guy friend of hers was trying to get her drunk. It was rather disheartening. I'm trying to see things from her perspective, and I'm not angry or anything like that, but I definitely don't feel like talking to her or keeping in touch until I've returned from my trip. What's your experience with this? Do you keep in touch and update your friends while traveling, or just wait until you get back?

  Generally I just wait until I get back. I think my friends understand that I want to have as much time as possible to enjoy my experience of traveling while I can. Also I think that it can be hard for people to get excited about a trip that someone else is on when they're stuck at home. That's pretty normal, although I think your friend should have made more of an effort to be interested in what was going on with you. But, hey, it's your trip, get out there and enjoy it! You can deal with "home" when you're there ;)
