How do water filters for camping work?

Answer:
Usually, they force water through ceramic filters, which remove just about everything. They are rated by the size of the particles that would go through. (Usually a micron level). Some also have the water go through some kind of silver-coated mesh, which apparently kills bad things as well. BTW, the energy to "force" the water through comes from some person pumping.
