Why in a plane crash do the feet often get cut off the passengers?

I recently read/heard this somewhere, but I can't remember the exact details... I think it has something to do with something "acting" as a guillotine, possibly some kind of safety device? Apparently for years, people wondered why when recovering plane crash remains... the passengers feet would often be cut clean off the body?

maybe its beacuse the plane lands on its belly, and the floor will split and move, cutting their feet off? i dont know, that's just my guess
