Do I need International Driving Permit in France?

Do I need an international driving permit?

I have US license and want to drive a car in the UK. I had an international driving permit from AAA awhile ago. It was simply typed up without checking the documents I provided. It seems the IDP is nothing more than a translation of the driving document. Since the US document is in English, do I really need the IDP for the UK?

Seems like it would be unnecessary, but getting a straight answer on this is impossible. Best source I could find is below. It indicates that unless you have a license form European country, that you must have an IDP. Unless you get an answer from a person with personal experience with this, looks like you should go ahead and get one to be on the safe side.
