What do I need to get my passport (US)?

• I've looked up what I need on line, but there's so much.."You need this, unless you have this, and this if you don't" that I'm having trouble understanding what I personally would need. I need to at least get the card to go to Canada in a few months. I have my SS card and my Birth certificate. But I'm paying off an old traffic ticket so I don't have a valid license at the moment, but won't have time to get it ordered if I wait. And can I do all this at my local post office or do I have to go somewhere specific? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

  See site below to red all application requirements and to print out the forms if you like. Then, when you have everything ready you take it to the post office to submit it. 2nd site below lists the acceptable forms of I.D. You may need to go get a state I.D. card to use since yo do not have a valid license. If you simply cannot do that, they will accept "secondary" identification. See 3rd site below to see what they will accept. If you are not traveling for a few months, you have plenty of time. Passports take 6 weeks by standard processing.
