What should I do if British Airways has lost my luggage?

Reasonable things to put in my carry on luggage?

  • Okay so in the summer i'm going to Europe and as well as the luggage that u check-in, i'll be bringing carry on luggage cause once, British Airways lost my luggage and I had to wait 2 weeks to get it back. So from then on, I put extra clothes inside those mini-suitcases also used as backpacks (they have weels.) Other than clothes, what should i put in? Nothing too heavy because i'll also be carrying a Juicy Couture bag and a laptop case which i may put in the mini suitcase.

So, just in case my luggage is delayed, lost, or (God forbid) stolen, I always pack a little kit of the basics in my carry on. Before you pack check the security status for limitations. Right now you can pack 3oz and smaller sizes of liquid personal hygiene items such as toothbrush/paste, contact solution/drops or glasses, deodorant, baby wipes/cleansing wipes, definitely any medications and clean under garments. Your basics kit should include anything you couldn't be without for at least a couple days as well as; anything that is identifying to you, things with your name and/or address, your keys, anything of value...camera, cell phone/PDA (if you're bringing it remember to temporarily put yourself on an international plan!) and finally things that cannot be replaced or are emotionally priceless. The best thing is to just not bring those important and special things unless absolutely necessary. I hope you have a wonderful trip!!

I can understand why you want to pack as much as you can in your carry on, but every airline only allows one personal item that fits underneath the seat like a handbag or laptop case, plus a luggage like a stroller or suitcase that fit the overhead bin. The rule is to put everything you cannot live without plus all the electronics and valuables in the carry on, something like chargers, USB, medicine, glasses/contact lens, address book, a coat.

I always divide my clothing into separate bags, so that if one bag is delayed at least one bag will still have shoes, socks, complete outfits, etc.(It happened once and I had to mix and match) If I have more than one item of anything to put in my checked luggage, I will also divide it among the bags. In my carry on bag, I will carry one complete outfit of clothes, the cosmetics that I need, toothbrush, at least a small bottle of shampoo and conditioner and a small hair spray, jewelry, brush, underwear, IPOD, my dvds/cds in a case or a dvd spindle (I remove the cases), language book/translator, batteries I need, pens, mini-notebook, puzzle book, gum, any necessary meds/vitamins, portable dvd player, camera/bag/sd cards, a travel adaptor, umbrella, and a Bible in a zippered-case with a backpack lock which I will put my cash inside (I keep it locked as I go through security, got $200 stolen once in security), and if room nighties. If you wear or carry a jacket or raincoat with several pockets, you can put items such as chewing gum, Kleenex, hand-wipes, small book, snacks, and such in those pockets to bring more things. I also pin a pashmina scarf to my raincoat (since the scarf is bulky or wear it around your neck), and you can put a small umbrella in your coat pocket. Bring a copy of your travel insurance plan, if you have one, and a list of contact numbers including the embassies, and print off your flight plan, and it is helpful to print off the maps of the airports for your connecting flight. Each suitcase and carry on should have several (I always put 3) copies of your name and address (one in outer pocket, one in inside lid of bag, and one pinned down under the clothes) because it is common for the airlines tag to get torn off the handle. I also put a copy of my flight plan in each bag so that it will be easier to know where to send the delayed luggage. This has helped on several occasions. Also, a small LED flashlight, even a keychain flashlight comes in handy while traveling, you may need to get something out of your bag when the overhead lights are turned down on the airplane.
