When traveling is it better to have a backpack or suitcase?

Wheels or Backpack for traveling the USA?

• This is something I am really tossing up between. A bag (more of a duffel bag, rather than a square suitcase) or a backpack? I was thinking of one of those backpacks that does have the wheels and handle but I seem to be reading a lot of comments saying that with these designs you compromise on needed features, eg, small wheels and a not so good harness. I know with Europe having wheels is quite a drawback but I have read that with the USA this isn't such a worry.... I don't know how true this is though. I'm just worried that I wont be able to manage a backpack on my own. I will be traveling all over the country using various methods of transport for 4 months. Any suggestions or advice will be most appreciated.

  my opinion would be backpack, the largest one you can wear on your back that is comfortable enough for you to have to haul around...the wheels would be nice, but if your gonna be using different transportation types for 4 moths, i dont think the wheels will hold up you know? especially since youll be sacrificing other features like you said...not all roads and aareas in the US are pretty, mostly only major cities...and then still you dont wanna necessarily be dragging a bag around, better to have it closer to you...so my opinion...get a backpack. wheels are overrated lol
