Traveling with expired Schengen visa / Temp RP?

Im a US Citizen. Do i need a Schengen Visa if im traveling Europe for 4 months?

  • I am planning on traveling for up to 4 months in and out of several different countries within the Schengen "region" (and also the UK). Does the 90 day "visa free" limit for US citizens apply to each individual country you travel to (say 90 days in Italy, then 90 days in Germany)? or is it an accumulative thing where i am allowed to travel mainland Europe in general for 90 days without needing a visa? Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

You can't apply for a Schengen visa as U.S. citizen. Uniform Schengen visa are only issued for tourist or business visits for a stay of up to 90 days within a six months period to citizens of those countries which are not exempt from the Schengen visa requirement. http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/EN/EinreiseUndAufenthalt/StaatenlisteVisumpflicht_node.html .. The 90 days of visa-free stay within six months applies to the entire Schengen zone and not to individual countries. http://dc.the-netherlands.org/Services/Consular_services/Visa/US_citizens/Traveling_to_the_Netherlands/Tourist_and_Business_Visa_for_the_Netherlands_Schengen/See_also/Map_of_Schengen_countries .. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_4361.html .. The United Kingdom does not participate on the travel part of the Schengen agreement. Your time spent in the U.K. does not count towards the 90 days entitlement in the Schengen zone. You can easily plan a 4 months journey through Europe if you plan to stay for one month in the United Kingdom and for some days in Croatia or any other country outside of the Schengen zone. For calculation of the 90 days of stay each day counts as a full day regardless whether you have arrived at 01:00am or 11:00pm. If you plan to stay in the Schengen zone for longer than 90 days you will need to apply for a residence permit at an individual Schengen country in which you plan to stay for longer. US citizen are able to do so based on agreements in several Schengen countries like Germany, Hungary, Sweden, just to name a few.

The short answer is you can only be in the Schengen zone for 90 day in a 6 month period: http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/index.jsp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement The UK is not a Schengen zone state and you > should < be OK if you are in the UK for at least a month of your trip. However, it is an EU member state and you need to re-post your question in the Immigration section to get more answers on that particular issue.
