How to move all belongings within US cheap and safe?

How can I store my entire 4BR house for a cross-country move , then have my belongings follow in a few months?

• We're moving from Maryland to Wyoming. We plan to take 6 months off work and travel the country slowly as we make our way out there. Any ideas on how to best store our worldly belongings for those 6 mos. then have them delivered when we arrive? Tractor trailer container?

  "Unique and economical" - well, you could post something on places like Craig's list - if they have a suitable category - as someone looking for storage space for 6 months. I know that people in our area who have old barns on their property are always renting out space to store boats, RVs, campers and so on during the winter in order to make some extra money. Perhaps there is someone who would provide space for your household items for a smaller cost than a storage company. You might very well have to accept less than ideal storage conditions, however. Ask the person about insurance coverage, or contact your present homeowner's insurance company to find out if there is a way to get coverage for that time in storage. If the barn burns down, floods, gets blown away in a storm, you do not wan to be left with no way to recoup some of that loss. The only two practical ways I know of for transporting those items later on are to 1) contract with a moving company to pick up the items and haul them cross country, or 2) fly back yourself and rent a big U-Haul type truck and drive it all yourself. Anything else seems a bit dodgy to me - entrusting your belongings to a stranger for movement 3/4 of the way across the country.
