How many packs on cigarettes can you bring on a plane?

How many packs of cigarette am I allowed to bring to America?

  • I am currently in S. Korea, and going to head back to California soon and discovered a type of cigarette that isn't sold there. I am wondering if I can just bring a whole suitcase full of them when i get on my flight back to America. If it matters, the brand is called Marlboro Ice Blast. The reason why I prefer to bring it back myself is because it's around $55 per pack when you buy it online for some reason and only (roughly) $2.50 in korea. If possible, can someone answer if it's ok to bring roughly 20-30 packs of cigarettes onto a plane (carry-on or cargo, doens't matter) and if i have to pay special tax or something with customs?

  • Answer:

You are allowed to bring in 2 cartons - 20 packs - duty free. Anything more looks like more than personal consumption so you will have to pay duty. The tobacco used in Marlboro cigs overseas is not grown in the United States and they are not made in the US which is why they are cheap. They avoid all the US taxes. Read the package and you see that they are from Switzerland or somewhere overseas. The Marlboros sold in the US are made from US grown tobacco and made here so that's why they are way more expensive. Do you taste a difference?? I never could but when I was in Afghanistan my boss used to say he could taste the difference in between US and the foreign ones.
