Does Gamefly normally have long shipping delays?

Have you ever tried shipping your luggage in advance of your international trip?

  • With all the security hassles these days, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried shipping their luggage in advance of their international flight so that you don't have to deal with having it searched. I've missed 2 connections because of security delays and I'm trying to figure out if there's another way. If you have done this, please let me know how you did it, would you do it again and how much did it cost you.

  • Answer:

I wouldn't ship my bags its WAY too expensive. I always carry most expensive, and necessary items on board w/ me. And check my bags. If you're worried about you bag getting lost put all your information INSIDE like trip details, address and phone number so that they can find you and get it back to you incase the barcode tag falls off. I've heard of people getting their houses robbed b/c they put their address on the outside of bags especially internationally.

If you're looking for a reliable service to guarantee your luggage will arrive, then call Sports Express (you don't have to be sending sports equipment, you can just send luggage). They have NEVER let me down. You can get online quotes by clicking the International button at www.SportsExpress.com. It definitely costs much more than checking your bags, but this is the place to go for the hassle-free experience. Just talk to them on the phone -- they know what they're doing!!

I haven't done this but I have traveled overseas and understand your complaint. I did read an article about this and it said that the prices start at $40 a bag (but that was just in the U.S) so I imagine its quite a bit more for international. The best advice that I could give you is to look at your flights and make sure to give yourself atleast 2 hours between your next flight. That's always worked great for me. You might be better off paying a little more for this rather than shipping your bags earlier bc that will cost you even more.

If cost is not a concern for you, by all means ship your luggage ahead. Two to three days is usually fine but you must also coordinate with your hotel or other people where you will be staying. I would encourage you to also have a carry-on bag with at least a change of clothes and ALL medicines you may require just in case you get delayed in transit. Another reason is that if you have NO luggage, that is a red flag for security to go over you with a fine tooth comb and that could delay the flight.

I have shipped my things a head of me when I was moving and shipped souvenirs back. No problem. But it will still get checked at Customs. So if you're asking if you can ship potentially illicit things to avoid getting caught, well, that's the risk you take. I wouldn't. It becomes a federal offense to involve the postal system. If it's a matter of you not wanting to carry your stuff or having a stranger go through your underwear, then yeah do it. BUT, Fedex for a 30kg bag is VERY expensive and unless you live by a seaport, cargo shipping will take upto 2 months, or more depending where you're going. Also, you'll need an address to ship to.
