When should I start planning road trip?

My friends and I are trying to plan a road trip for next summer, when we are done school, need help!?

  • We are planning roughly a 5 day road trip to California, where we will stay in a rented condo for about 2 weeks. We want to go to the beach and go to a few places. We are trying to save costs as much as we can, but still want to have fun. We have a few ideas, but we really have no clue where to start. Any tips or hints on how to make planning it easier or what to look out for would be great.

  • Answer:

I would recommend contacting the Chamber of Commerce where your condo is located. They will provide some great information and coupons for local businesses. Go to your local Motel6 and pick up a Hotel Directory which lists all of their Motels Nationwide. I'm not sure how far you're travelling, but this will give you an idea on stops along the way and you can make reservations as needed. They will typically have places to eat and gas up nearby. If you're planning on saving costs by piling as many people into a room like I used to do ski trips...plan on arriving late or the clerk will count how many people are actually in your group. ;) I'll guess you're looking to hit the Southern California beaches, since that's where most people end up. Just about all the beaches from LA to San Diego are pretty awesome, depends on what you're looking for. If you're planning on going to Amusement Parks, Orange County seems to have most of them and the beaches are close by. Huntington Beach and Newport Beach are my favorites because I used to live nearby. They have a decent nightlife and lots to do. Laguna Beach is a little more secluded and upscale. Venice Beach more towards LA has a bunch on odd personalities and is great for people watching. Mission Beach and La Jolla in the San Diego area is also a favorite destination. Check the URL below to get more of an idea of what's around a specific location. Good luck and have fun!
