Can I get a passport card at an on-site issuing regional passport agency without paying the $60 expedite fee?

  • I am a current passport holder, and want to know if I can go to one of the regional passport agencies that issues the passport card onsite for $30 and not have to pay the $60 expedite fee. I do not want to mail my passport off just to get the passport card though. All I want to do is get my passport card for $30 instead of having to pay extra mailing costs to get the card.

You'll have to pay all rush fees regardless if you apply via mail or in person at the regional office. BUT, YOU DON'T NEED THE PASSPORT CARD IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A PASSPORT, it is needlessly redundant and even the passport office employee will advise you of this and ask you why you believe you need both.

No. Any time you use a Regional Passport Agency, you must pay the $60 fee. Why do you want a passport card if you already have a passport book. There is no need for it.

While you have no 'need' of a passport card when you already have a passport book, it is very useful to have two IDs you can use for crossing a border. Those people who claim it is no use to have both clearly have no experience with having both. A passport book takes way more care than a passport card, so you when you want to carry your passport around with you at all times to be ready to cross the border on a whim or short notice, having a passport card is very useful. And if you often travel to Mexico or Canada and do travels farther away that require you to send in your passport to get a visa, having card as well as book is very handy. And besides, some people just like to have a passport card for extra ID, like people who do not have a driving license or state ID.
