Water (water filter pitcher), canned food or MREs, can opener, emergency foil blankets, portable generator, flashlight, wood, lighter or waterproof matches. Go to your local camping supply store (REI) or Walmart/Target, they should have most of the things you'll need.

You can purchase the Mylar "space" blankets for a pretty low cost and they are small when packaged so they will fit well in a kit.

It really depends on where you live. Which mountains are you talking about? Which state? You need a battery operated radio for news reports. and extra batteries. Extreme Reaction: Is your house equipped with a generator that you can start when the power fails? If so learn how to use it. It should be hooked up to supply power to your furnace, water pump if you have a well, refrigerator, some electric lights and outlets. $1000 to 1500 if you have to buy and have it installed. But it should last for years, and provide power until the normal power is restored. Keep you car gas tank filled, so you can go get more gas for the generator in a 5 gallon can. Store the gas outside. OR - Install a stove that burns wood pellets. This will provide heat, but not electric power. OR- If you plan to leave your house until the power is restored it may be for 1-5 days depending on the severity of the storm. Ask you neighbors what they do. If space permits, make an agreement with friends who live in the next town: If either of you loose power, you can spend time with the other until power is restore. Make a list of what to take/bring with you. (Blankets, Coats, food, personal items) OR- A motel room for a week might be cheaper, but you could get your water pipes frozen at home. Some wrap water pipes with fiberglass insulation, and leave a faucet dripping (moving water takes longer to freeze). OR- I've only had water pipes frozen once in 37 years. Don't have a generator. Went to a motel room only two nights. Lost $200 worth of frozen food, due to no power for the freezer.
