I used to work for TSA, it was an ok job with deceit pay and pretty good benefits. I believe you start out at 12 something and hour but they adjust the rate according to where you live, so you may start out a bit higher. When I worked for them it was right after 9/11, (I was actually in the first group of agents who were hired) and at the time we used to go to the gates and screen passengers before they boarded the planes. That was what I enjoyed the most. For me it was tedious standing at the security point all day, but they do rotate positions every 20 minutes. Remember you will probably have to work weekends and holidays also. It was a lot like being in the military. We had before and after shift briefings, our uniforms had to be perfect, no gum, or mints while on the floor, you had to stand pretty straight etc. The requirements were that you had to pass the pre test which consisted of basic math etc questions, logic questions and somethings with with the x-ray machine (which takes a little bit of time to learn to read so don't worry about that). Than you have to have a pretty clean record to get clarence to work in an airport. They do a 10 year background check and you have to have at least a high school diploma and prove it. Please remember all this was 6 years ago so some of it may have changed by now. I'm now a gate agent with the airlines and love it. I don't make as much money but love the job. It's not as strict as Copy That explained. I was hired just a year ago and I started out at 15 something an hour, O'Hare should pay good since its a huge airport. There is more to tsa then walking around all day, you may be screening checked bags, in which case you don't deal with passengers at all, but you have a great time with your co workers (hopefully), at the check point its not so strict, as long as your uniform looks nice supervisors are fine with it not being perfect, you don't have to stand up straight anymore, still not supposed to chew gum but we will sneak in a mint every now and again! It is rewarding, its a good experience that can lead to other security jobs, and in just a few years you can be a supervisor, or there are tons of side jobs (collateral duties) you can do too. Best of all its a great stepping stone to other federal jobs or local govt. jobs. I know 4 or 5 people who have been hired by the California Highway Patrol and other police departments. TSA will train you for everything you need to do so there's not prior experience necessary!!! The requirements to get in are easy, hs diploma, lift up to 50 lbs bend and squat, you can see and hear, pass a little test after applying (pretty easy test). I hope you join to experience it for yourself!!!
