Moving across country, cheapest way?

What is the best way to close a rubbermaid bin when moving across the country?

  • All, I'm about to move across the country and have a whole bunch of blue rubbermaid bins filled with my stuff. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on sealing them for transport. I thought about taping them but if I wrap tape around them they won't sit well on top of each other. A small drywall screw might work along the rim but I'd prefer not to make a bunch of holes in them. Is giving a moving company all these rubbermaid bins to transport even a good idea? Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

Small bolts with nuts on the end really are the best option. We used bins like that a lot in the north, and that is how we secured them. I have used bins like that several times for moving, and if the bins are good quality it should be fine. If the bins are poor quality expect some of them to be cracked when you get them.

I taped mine together and had no trouble with the moving company. They sit well if you tape the cover down to each side instead of trying to do one long strip of tape from one side to the other. I wouldn't use see through containers though...just in case someone sees something good inside and trys to steal it.

Duct tape. If you want them to sit flush..put them in the bins, duct tape them, put them into boxes, duct tape those. ask your movers..they will give you the best advice. number, label and list everything!!

The simplest way that I can think of would be to put a strip of tape going from the handle to the side of the bin. That way they are taped shut but still easily stackable.

Duct tape - or better a strong clear tape. (duct tape leaves a residue sometimes, but nail polish remover can get it off, or rubbing alcohol)
