What is the difference between a passport book and a passport card?
-
Why is a passport book so much more expensive than the card? I am trying to find out because a friend and I want to go to Jamaica I need a passport to go. I am so confused.

Answer:
The passport book is used for all air travel. The card is as small as a credit card - it doesn't take as much to manufacture them. The U.S. Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book. The passport card cannot be used for international travel by air. http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html All you have to do is to go to a local Passport Acceptance facility - usually your local Post Office. If you have never been issued a US passport, you must appear in person to have the application accepted. Some offices require appointments. You will need a completed Form DS-11 You can fill it out online and print it out - print ALL pages http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/for%E2%80%A6 or get one at the Post Office. They will be happy to answer questions Proof of US citizenship - usually a Certified copy of your birth certificate - the one issued by the county or state in which you were born http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get%E2%80%A6 or: Previously issued, undamaged U.S. Passport Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state* check box Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth Naturalization Certificate Certificate of Citizenship One passport photo - most USPS offices will do it for $15 copy of your vaild US/state gov't issued ID Present Identification When applying for a U.S. passport in person, acceptable identification must be presented at the time of application. Primary Identification (One of the following): Previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport Naturalization Certificate Valid Driver's License Current Government ID (city, state or federal) Current Military ID (military and dependents) There are other options if you do not have current valid ID A fee of $25 to be paid to the acceptance agency - this is not specific to the USPS - you would pay this the first time at the Passport Agency as well. A check or (Postal) money order for $110 to the Dept. of State Normal processing is 4-6 weeks. If you want the passport in 2-4 weeks, you add $60 for expedited service ($170) http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get%E2%80%A6

Card is good for Mexico, Canada, and select islands. They are good for land and sea travel but no air travel. Book is good everywhere else and for air travel. Definitely get the book, card is useless. Remember that passports are good for 10 years, so don't buy the card in case you go on a trip to Europe or Asia.
