When do I use TSA locks for my luggage?

Where to buy TSA luggage locks that show if TSA has opened them?

  • I am leaving in a few days for a trip to China and the group I am traveling with requires TSA approved locks on all checked luggage. I know that TSA approved locks are the easiest to pick and don't really protect your stuff but whatever. I'm trying to find the TSA approved locks that show if they have been opened. In the ones I've seen online there is a little circle that changes from green to red if your lock has been opened by a TSA agent. But so far I have been unable to find one. I have been to two Targets and nothing. So any suggestions?

  • Answer:

Not knowing what city you're in, it's pretty hard to help you out with that one. Check your yellow pages for a high end luggage shop or two, and give them a call. They would be more likely to sell a lock such as that. Target, Walmart and the like would typically carry the cheaper ones.

The local AAA office will have them for sale.

It's possible to compromise a bag via the zipper and then re-close it without opening the lock. That's common knowledge among airport security and on youtube. Don't even bother buying a lock. Even the locks can be picked in under 2 minutes. Remember, "locks are for honest people".

From personal experience, I had a TSA worker open my checked bag (it had a TSA approved lock on it). There was a piece of paper inside notifying me that TSA had opened my bag. And no, nothing was taken
