Can I travel from Spain to the UK on a Spanish passport on the day it expires?
-
I know it's silly but as i bought my passport last year, I assumed it had years on it... but as it was a replacement it in fact runs out on February 4th 2012. I booked a holiday which by coincidence has me coming back from Spain on the 4th (glad I didn't find a cheaper flight a day or two after!) Normally getting a new passport is really easy and takes only a few days but they've closed down the local consulate (I only found out today) and I apparently now have to somehow get to Scotland to find the nearest one! With it being new years and other Spanish holidays coming up, me having to work and travel issues, it could be really difficult for me to get a new passport on time. So yeah, any info you have would be awesome. Please try to source you answers so I can be sure, thanks! (by the way I was born and have lived in the UK all my life, my passport is Spanish because my mum is. But as I've never had a UK passport I don't think I'd be able to get one in time.)

Answer:
You should be fine. The date of expiry is the last day of validity; your passport will be valid unless there is a delay. As an EU citizen a valid passport or national ID card is always enough to be admitted to any EU member state. The airlines are aware of that and will not care if your passport expires will in the UK. In fact, if you by any means can prove your citizenship you are still to be admitted in the UK, even if you do not have the correct travel document. However airlines almost always will demand a valid passport or national ID card. If you have a valid Spanish ID card (Documento nacional de identidad) you do not need a passport at all for this trip.

As a general rule your passport has to be valid for at least the duration of a stay in another country since you are a resident of the visiting country logically you would be just going home however since there is no Guarantee that the flight wouldn't be delayed and therefore you would not have a valid passport to travel with the answer is probably no but you could always check with the appropriate authorites

no. If it expires that day you can not travel on that day. i have a friend who traveled to Costa rica the day his passport expired, once he got to customs in CR they told him he had to return to the US as soon as possible because he did not have rights to be there.

Unless there's some massive flight delay, you'll be ok.
