Countries that require a passport renewal within 6 months?

Do I need my passport for 6 months flying to the states?

  • I am canadian with a passport that I have had for under 6 months. I will be flying from detroit (not canada) but the fine print says this: "For travel outside Canada, most countries require a passport valid for at least six months beyond your return date. In addition, depending on your passport's country of issue and the country you are visiting, you may also need a visa and/or medical inoculations." can someone help me understand if I will be okay? I have flown from detroit to another state around 2 years ago and had no problems but didnt have a passport then thanks

  • Answer:

"most countries require a passport valid for at least six months beyond your return date" That doesn't mean you must have the passport for 6 months before travelling. It means there must be at least 6 months left on the passport before it expires.

The official guideline is 6 months. However if you have with you a return ticket back to Canada, showing that you have means of returning to your country before your passport expiry, it should be okay. The 6 months rule is about the expiry. A new passport issued 6 months has nothing to do with this rule.
