What can you take on the airlines now?

What size hand luggage can you take on low cost airlines?

  • I'm travelling with Ryanair soon and am taking one 10kg piece of luggage onto the plane. What size/dimension bag should I get for this? Thank you in advance :-)

  • Answer:

My husband has travelled with Ryanair twice in the past month from Shannon and Dublin to Tenerife and on the first occasion he had a laptop and a bag and was told he couldn't take both so had to put the laptop in the bag. Ryanair are being quite strict now on baggage allowance, anyway, the dimensions of the luggage you're allowed are 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Quite a lot of shops now sell little mini suitcases with wheels that are exactly these dimensions so you shouldn't have any problem finding a bag this size.

You can take up to 15kgs if you are putting baggage into the hold. However, if you are taking a bag onto the actual seating area they do measure the size of the bag, they have this contraption that they will ask you to put the bag into, if it does not fit they are charging about €30 to take the bag onto the plane. I don't know the exact sizes, but slightly wider than a brief case, laptop bag, but twice as wide. maybe their website might have the exact measurements. I'll go on a mini rant now,....I agree the size of luggage people were taking on to planes was/is getting ridiculous, and dangerous, but the likes of Ryanair started this trend in the first place,,,, just annoys me so much.

From the Ryanair web site 55cm x 40cm x 20cm for hand luggage.

I've just flown with Ryanair this morning. I bought a trolley case a few years ago which is 'cabin size' ie. the dimentions are standard for all airlines. For the first time this morning, I noticed that some people at check-in were actually being told to have their hand luggage weighed although it didn't necessarily look big/heavy. In my experience, I've seen people with far bigger bags than mine and they've got through, so it really depends who's checking on the day. I would suggest buying a 'cabin size' bag, and that way you'll never have to worry about being overweight (as it's quite difficult to go over 10kilos without regular size toiletries), and if its got pockets in the front, it's useful for stuffing in extra items.

No one seems to bother checking the size ,but I would advise you to make sure you are not over weight as the penalty for over weight luggage is at a premium
