How much money do I need to travel Western Europe for one month?

  • I am going to travel Europe for one month and was wondering how much money it would cost. I have $2,326 saved up and I plan to go to Lisbon, Madrid, Ibiza, Barcelona, Marseilles, Paris, Trier, Bitburg (small town in Germany), and Amsterdam. I have my plane ticket bought and I want to stay in hostels but I don't know how much they cost. Please provide any insight on this subject.

Hi, I think you have a rather decent amount saved up for spending. For hostels: Should be about $900-1,000 Hostel beds can range from 14 euros (Spain and Portugal) a night to 40 (in France). I would strongly suggest you check out www.hostelworld.com, it'll give you a better idea of the availability and prices for the dates and you'll be able to budget accordingly. Most hostels also include breakfast, so that will help your wallet. For food:Should be about $700 In Spain and Portugal, you should be able to get sandwiches for lunch at around 3-6 euros and your dinners shouldn't cost you more than 15 euros. If they do, you're eating in the wrong places (too touristy). France should be about the same but Paris will cost you more for dinner. I'm not sure about Germany though. FYI Beer, wine and coffee are cheaper than soft drinks and bottled water. Travels between cities: How were you planning on going between cities? Using the bus is definitely the cheapest way to get around and all those cities have major bus lines between them. You can get a great idea of prices, schedules and times here: www.busbud.com. Activities: A lot of museums have free visiting days. Look on the website of the one's you're interested in! Also, check out the tourist information for the cities you're visiting. Maybe you'll be lucky and there will be outside expositions, a festival, etc. Visiting food markets are also a great way to learn about a city and walking around, snapping pictures and talking to local vendors is completely free! I hope this helps! Kim
