Should i change my name back before getting a passport?

How soon do you have to change your passport etc when you change your name?

  • I'm in the U.k., and I'm getting my named changed by Deedpoll soon for various reasons. But i'm the middle of my A-levels (Think that's like Second to last year in High School?) Will changing my name affect if i get my results or if they count etc? And can I wait a while (Like, a couple of months) before applying for a new passport in my new name and still use my old name & Old passport? Like, as soon as I change my name is it legally required to change everything to the new name?

  • Answer:

Erm. regarding the A-levels, I have no idea. I think you might have to write to all the exam boards and notify them immediately that you're not taking the exams as Person A. anymore, but as Person B. But I'm not sure of their policies on what i assume would be a very rare occurrence. I'd say to contact the board (AQA, CCEA or Edexcel etc) and ask them directly on what to do. It'd probably be simpler, if you can wait that long, to hang on until after your exams to change your name. As you've already registered for exams under one name in Sept., it may be difficult to change. And Regarding you're passport and whatnot, as soon as you change you're name by deed poll it is legally binding. You are essentially that person you have re-named yourself as. So you need to send off a new passport application in your NEW name with a copy of you're 'Change of Name' Document and you're original birth certificate on it. This is to prove you were born in the U.k. under Name 1, but you are applying for it in a different name because you are now Name 2. If that doesn't make sense, Try http://www.ukdps.co.uk/ChangingYourNameOnYourPassport.html It might explain it more eloquently. Hope I helped!

What's the reason why you're changing your name? As with your passport, if you are legally able to change your name, then it's imperative that you change your passport as well. When you go to immigration, they will doubt your credentials beacuse according to your IDs, you're somebody but your passport says you're somebody else. The authorities will suspect you & may not let you board the plane. All of your IDs need to be changed to your new name ASAP. That includes mailing address. You'd have to notify the Post Office that you're no longer Mr. A but is now Mr. B. I hope this helps.
