What are the necessary things you must bring before backpacking?

Tourist backpacking essentials?

  • I am going on a tourist backpacking trip soon and am trying to plan out what I need to bring with me. If any of you have gone on a backpacking trip (whether it was Europe, the United States, etc.) what things did you bring with you? What are some things that you are glad you brought with you? Is there anything you brought that you thought you needed but ended up not using? Thanks a bunch!

    Other than clothing, Insect repellent, water bottle, flashlight, a lighter, something significant to snack on (such as trail mix) sun screen (depends on where you're going), first aid kit, Luxuries: a good book, toilet paper (especially if you're a girl)

Nylon clothes, including nylon socks and even underwear (check Magellans.com for the men's underwear) - nylon can be washed out in the evening and hung up to dry and will usually be dry by morning! Take a small nylon rope for a clothes line and some small plastic clothes pins. Magellans has a floppy rubber stopper that will work in any sink and they have little packs of clothes detergent sheets that look like a piece of tissue but dissolve into clothes detergent. This makes it easier to pack less clothing! Nylon also doesn't collect body odor like cotton. Magellans also makes some good security items like money belts and day bags with steel cables in the straps and fabric with a built-in wire mesh that cannot be cut by pickpockets. Those types of items might be very handy.
