How fast can I get a passport?

  • So I am headed to Canada next month. Roughly 6 Weeks away. I know all I need to go from the US to Canada is a passport card. My plan was to expedite the passport card and be on my way. Turns out you can not expedite a passport card for fast delivery. So now I have to spend twice as much on a regular passport book and then still have that expedited. My plans all came to stop. So what is the fastest way to get a passport at the best price. I see all these websites charging $250+ to get passports super fast, but I am not going to do that as I am not rich. Im thinking of going to the post office or something. Will I be able to expedite my passport and have it here in time or am I completely screwed? Any tips for or advice or do I just give up? ps. I don't want to spend more then $200 a passport to get it in time (since i have to buy 4)

    You can expedite the passport card processing to 2-3 weeks [$115 for an adult] but you cannot order overnight courier delivery for a passport card. They will be sent to you by 1st class mail. However that will still be sufficient time to have it ready for travel in six weeks. The passport card only allows land/sea travel to Canada. For a flight the passport-book is mandatory. U.S. children below 16 years do not need a passport to cross the land border. There is no reason to be using any "company". You can order passports through the State Department directly. Processing times for US passports from the State Department are 4-6 weeks from the time of the application for routine service and 2-3 weeks door-to-door using their expedited service. You can cut down on some of the time by applying at a passport agency rather than mailing your applications and documentation -- and it isn't a bad idea since most people don't like mailing in their ID and birth certificates. Fees are listed on the site. An adult card with expedited service $115 plus $12.72 if you want it couriered over night -- which will save a few more days if you really need it. Children cost less. Whether you go for the card or booklet is up to you, but if you have any thoughts of traveling to any country other than Canada in the next five years, you'll need to booklet type anyway.
