What backpack should I buy for trip to Europe?

Europe - Suitcase or backpack? Please Help need to buy tomorrow>>>>?

  • Hi, I am going to Europe for a week with my brother an Hubby. They both have backpacks. I am trying to choose out of a backpack an a suitcase. i spotted a suitcase that is real nice med size with wheel an small handle no strap. Another is med sized an soft with handle an sholder strap. an I didnt look at any backpacks as i am very small lady an wasnt sure if I would be able to carry the weight. My friend said that if i go to a camping shop they size you up. Hubby said to go with one of the suitcase but i said are you sure as you both have backpack, he said it doesnt matter as long as i can carry it. we will be hiring a car most of the time but have to go on two planes an also on the eurostar. an might have to lug up steps etc in hotels. or to get to train an car etc. What do you sugest. also is there any special events over there in may?

  • Answer:

For the travel you're doing, it sounds like either will do. there are places on the trains where you can put your suitcases and either will also work with the car. It doesn't sound like you're going to be moving from place to place every day. There are lots of events in Europe in May. If you happen to be in nothern Italy at the end of the month, the Palio in Ferrara is good: http://www.paliodiferrara.it/?lang=en . It really depends on where you are specifically - it's a big continent. This is a good resource for finding events world-wide: http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm

use a suitcase with wheels unless you're planning on walking long distance. Chances are the furthest you'll have to walk is the lenght of a train platform? backpacks are alot of hassle if you can't lift it easily.

I'd suggest a trolley - not a suitcase - with wheels. Suitcases start to wobble and tilt each time you pull them over a curb, but with trolleys, you hardly notice it. Of course carrying your trolley over stairs in uncomfortable. But often there are elevators and/or escalators. Choose a trolley with comfortable handles that feel good in your hand. Remember, you'll have to carry a heavy weight with these handles - so no funny stuff, no sharp edges.

a carry on sized back pack would be much eaiser then pack light because or the airline security ... good excuse to buy stuff there and ship it home

there can only be one!
