Is it safe to take the Amtrak alone?

What should I take on my long distance Amtrak vacation?

  • My fiancee and I are going to be taking our first vacation on a Amtrak from Chicago to Oregon. Ive never traveled on a Amtrak or a plane so Im very new to this. What should I take with me? I know you allowed 2 carry on bags. Is bringing your own food allowed? makes for a cheaper ride! How about alchol? can you bring on your own? Any help would be greatly aprreciated! Thanks

    A journal or sketchbook. Crossword puzzle or boardgame. magazines Trains get cold at night-bring a lightweight blanket, better to use your own & know it's clean. Plastic rain poncho. Bring clothes that can do double duty. Use sweats & long t-shirts as pjs. A pair of slippers to feel cozy. Yes, do bring food- save $. Bring sandwiches or good takeout for your first meal onboard. Snacks- dried fruit, nuts, cup of noodles etc. Tea bags or instant coffee. Aspirin. Tums. Have a great trip!

My wife and I took that trip. It's a lot of fun. Don't be afraid to move around. Spend as much time as you can in the Vista Dome. Also, get a sleeper room, if you do, then the meals are free. They will provide some snacks too. You still have to tip the waitstaff though. You're going to be with them for two and a half days, so you don't want to tick them off on the first night. At some stations (Minot, Spokane, and a couple others), you can get food and beverages in the station, or from vendors there. Many people bring their own food on board also, but I don't remember ever being hungry during the trip.

Bring your own Scooby snacks, a book cards,etc no you can't BYOB Unless you are sneeky about it,IE vodka or gin in a water bottle. Wink Wink.

i traveled from rochester, ny to penn station new york last month and you can bring food...and alocohol im assuming...they dont check your bags or anything. we even brought our "checked" bags on the train with us...they just went on the luggage racks above our heads. theyre not real picky like on the airplane...they also have a food cart but the food isnt all that great and its expensive
