How do you carry money while abroad?

  • this is our 1st holiday abroad in tenerife and im alittle unsure about how to carry money , im thinking take enough in cash for the 1st day (should i take english money )then use my santander debit card to withdraw enough money daily 4 that day , is this how other ppl do it ??

  • Answer:

I carry a small amount of cash, my ATM (debit) card to withdraw money and my credit card(s) as backup if needed. Most of the money I need for a trip is withdrawn via the ATM card.

I don't think Tenerife is too dangerous for carrying cash, but it never hurts to be careful and carry money in a front pocket or somewhere else secure to discourage pick-pocketers. But your question seems to be more about getting money to use. As you know, in Tenerife they use the Euro, and nearly everyone withdraws it from the ATM/bank machine once they arrive. You get a very good exchange rate, minus a small fee, usually. The fee is usually per transaction so it could get expensive to withdraw money daily. I'd withdraw at least €200 Euro at a time, and keep most of that hidden somewhere on your person, with only maybe €40 in your main wallet that you use during the day.

I would buy a SPI belt off amazon or another type of body fit bag. Don't wear expensive looking jewlry even take off your wedding bands! also a good tip is to remember to put your bag between your legs if you ever need to set it down. Also remember to let your bank know you are traveling or they will freeze your card because they will think it is fraud. Keep enough cash stored somewhere safe in your hotel in case of emergency and keep some on hand but try to use your card so the bank can track it. Actually it varies because some vendors may not use card. but don't carry too much! and if you carry too "mcuh" then hide it under some clothing on body.

Don't withdraw money daily because the fees for withdrawing money abroad are very high, and to make it worse, the bank usually can't tell you how much you'll have to pay exactly to withdraw money. But something between EUR 3 and EUR 5 would be typical. Don't take English money either - whatever for? Maybe take some to pay for a snack, a taxi or a tube ticket when you get back, but not for using it in Tenerife. Get some Euros from your bank, and I'd take all the cash you might need with you at once. I always pay a lot by credit card when I'm abroad because that way, I don't need a lot of cash. Just some, for some snacks and little things.

I frequently travel with money in my shoe, assuming I'm wearing closed shoes.
