Should we reveal credit card to small hotels/inns when making reservation?

  • We do not have choice, but to reveal credit card number, name, expiry date to someone we totally do not know, when we are booking hotels, don't we? I was feeling a bit uncomfortable when small hotels requested for my credit card information when I was booking hotels for my europe trip. They do not even have a website for me to enter credit card information and the information was sent by email... What should we do? Do we have choice? Is this normal?

    We experienced the same thing on our trip, and we even had to send a cashiers check to one hotel. When we checked in, everything was on the up and up and the small hotel had the cashiers check neatly sitting in our reservation folder waiting for the check in. Many hotels in Europe seem to work this way, you are lucky that it's only a credit card they are looking to receive. The good news is, you probably have protection through your credit card, just in case something goes wrong. Enjoy your trip.

It's becoming standard practice now to pre book with credit cards. My brother travels to Brazil alot and he keeps a low limit card-$500- max just for the small hotels and places. If it gets stolen the damage is minimal. I would do that.

It is absolutely normal to have to give hotels and varied other businesses your credit card number to secure a reservation. They won't, if they're legit, use the card unless you show and even then you can still choose another mode of payment. If they do use the card, you can challenge the bill.

Often times reservations are secured by the credit card, you don't actually get charged until you check out. I've found it pretty standard in the hotel industry for them to use the CC and reserve the room in your name for the number in your party. Especially during busy seasons. Most times it will extend your check in time beyond what they would normally hold the room for. If your really not sure about using the CC ask to speak to a supervisor when you make the reservation and if ever you do see any unauthorized activities on your card report them ASAP! Good Luck!
