How to move all belongings within US cheap and safe?

What is the best plan to move car and belongings from CT to CA?

  • Although I HATE driving long distances (in this case from east coast to west coast), I even considered renting a UHaul truck and driving there, BUT unfortunately there is no truck for some reason that can accommodate the move and towing my Acura (I have no idea why). SO back to my original plan of flying to California, bringing as much luggage as I can with me on the plane BUT I was wondering the best and easiest way to bring the rest of my belongings (clothes, shoes, NO FURNITURE) and my car to California? Should I ship the car with a auto moving company and ship my belongings through USPS or FedEx? Or is there a company that does both? My move is approaching and I'd like to be prepared. PLEASE HELP, AND THANKS :)

  • Answer:

No Fedex or USPS. Most car shipping offer container shipping service too. If will definitely be cheaper than shipping with fedex. Some car shipping company let your put stuff in the car. Ask them if you can fit some boxes in trunk and backseat. Terminal to Terminal car shipping will be cheaper. If you are not in rush to use a car (usually T2T take longer), drive the car to the shipping terminal instead of having them pick the car up from your house

Not all car transportation companies allow you to put belongings in the car. In fact some disallow this. Something to consider. Car transportation company based out of FL is Ship Your Car Now. They've been doing it for years and ship cars all over the United States. You could then ship your stuff through PODS or another similar service. Another option is paying a bigger moving company (United Van Lines for example) that can move all your belongings AND car in the same truck. Though that route can be an expensive one.

If you decide to have your car shipped to California, put as much as you can into the car--you'll kill 2 birds with one stone. Whatever won't fit, ship it as cheaply as possible with UPS, FedEx or, USPS. Just be sure to insure the packages for their value.

If you're taking anything other than clothing and shoes, I might recommend that you sell/give away items and purchase them again in California. Otherwise, use UPS for shipping large boxes. If you want someone to do it all for you (including packing), call several moving companies for quotes; they will often negotiate a cheaper price with you. Re car moving, it's usually a different company, as the trucks, moving technique and insurance are different. Note that the average cost to ship a car is about $700-900. (But the average cost to drive is about $600 including gas, motels, meals, so it could be considered cost-effective.) Here's some hints: http://www.ehow.com/how_17642_ship-car-across.html Also note that airline luggage costs can be anywhere from $25-50 per bag, which might be more than it would cost to ship it.
