What to pack on a road trip to California?

What is the best way to pack food for a road trip with two teens for 14 hrs down California to Arizona?

  The guiding concept on doing this is that you pack your food as separate pieces and then assemble it all as needed. In practice you would have sliced tomatoes in one zip lock bag or a Tupperware container , lettuce pieces in another , individual sliced meats and cheeses in another and so on. . To make sandwiches tastier use mustard in squeeze bottles and salad dressing makes a really nice addition to any sandwich. If you wanted to do a fruit salad you would use the same method: pre- cut the pieces, keep separate and assemble as needed. Things that will dry out on the other hand are best packed whole and then sliced as needed. This method I described has two distinct advantages over the assemble it all before you hit the road method: It will result in a much better quality of food when you finally do eat it and it will minimize the possibility of getting a food-borne illness as a result of cross contamination You have two teenagers riding with you which means that you have an on board labor force -put them to work. There are those who will tell you that single serving containers of drinks, chips and so forth are THE way to go and to some degree they're right about that.
