What should I take to Africa?

  • I'm going to Guinee (west Africa) on the 28th of may. I'll be gone all summer. If it were you what would you pack with for this special trip.

  • Answer:

Take only what you feel you can't live without. Plan to live as much as you can in the place where you are, which may mean living with less than you're used to. Don't bring too many clothes. Don't bring things you'd rather not lose--international travel can be hazardous for luggage. Keep it simple and light is my best advice. You can get things like shampoo and soap and sanitary pads there most likely, so don't bring a supply from home!

This is going to sound strange, but take TAMPONS. This is a little trick I picked up travelling in africa. If you do not want to have your bags searched at customs over there, make sure you put all of your bra's and panties and tampons on the top of your bag. If African officials (mostly men) attempt to search your bags with you present, they will be embarassed and say they are fine. On the more practical side, get a lonely planet book on the counrty you are visiting. I lived in Malawi for 6 months and my lonely planet book helped me in the prep. If you are single and are travelling alone, get a wedding band (real or fake,,whatever) and wear it. It may reduce the occurance of men trying to "hit" on you. Not to be a racist person, but I was definately a minority in Malawi being blonde haired and blue eyed and I was "approached" a lot. I did not hear about the wedding band trick unti lI was back home. Also, if the area you are going to is more remote, make sure to take pepto and tylenol. These are 2 things I coulnd not find while I was overseas. Also, when you are going home, leave your extra's for local people and explain to them how and when to use it. They will be very grateful. Also, take a money pouch that fits into the waistband of your pants. Make sure it is large enough to hold your passport, but is small enough to not show very much through your pants. I hope this was useful! Have a GREAT trip
