Can I take this item abroad?

Is it the law or just airlines policy that a passenger on an aeroplane can only take 1 item of hand luggage?

  • I need to fly from Birmingham to Edinburgh and take with me 4 laptops to run a training course but I spoke to BMI Baby and they said I could only take 1 item of hand luggage. I can't put them in the hold or they will not be insured (and bound to get damaged) I had hoped I could just pay extra for each bag I took onboard? I am cvoncerned that my only alternative will be to drive which is not ideal as I have a very busy week and little/ no time between sessions to travel!!! Help!? Any solutions?

  • Answer:

Airline policy but failure to comply with airline ticket/baggage policies is sufficient for you to be denied passage since when you buy a ticket you enter into an agreement with them to be bound by their policies.

Airline policy.

How many pieces of lugagge you can take with you is determined by the airline you fly. Since you are limited to one piece of luggage, can you find a small rolling suitcase that's within the carry on luggage limitation that can fit all 4 computers within it? That might solve your problem without causing too much hassle...... Good luck and happy training!

Well, it maybe airline policy. However, there are loopholes. Put one or 2 laptops in a rucksack. Then have one under each arm. thats 4 laptops. you may even fit 3 in a rucksack. im guessing this is the same as the problem as having an over weight suitcase. You can pull clothes out of the case until it reaches the 15 or 20Kg allowance. All the clothes you pull out, just put them on. There is no limit as to the amount of clothes you can wear. (I would suggest you buy a fat suit, then hide them inside the suit, buth this may raise alarms as to why you are hiding electronics unser the suit)

Most airlines allow for one carry-on AND a purse for a female flier; and with the huge totes that are popular these days and depending on the size of your laptops, if you wrapped them in bubble wrap, which is very light, it seems you could possibly put two in the carry-on and two in your "purse," which you will try to place on your shoulders and look as if it is casually light. As long as they do not exceed the weight and size limitations you should be fine. They have rarely stopped me from having a large tote and my roll on carry -on and I can not tell you how many large and very heavy objects I have carried on with my "purse" and roll-on from London to home. Go to the BMI website and look under baggage for size and weight restrictions and see if you can fit them into those two carriers.

ITS MYYYY LAW!!!

It's airline policy now but if they are small enough you could try putting all 4 into one carry-on bag the regulations are 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and when I went on an aeroplane we had a handbag and another bigger bag and they just told us to put one it the other so you should be able to do that with your laptop bags if you get one at the top of the allowance you should be able to fit them in or you could try to get a deal with your insurance? That might work too hope it helps xx

What about shipping it via ups/fed ex and picking it up once you get there and then ship it back to yourself. They are insured and most of the time can hold it at a location for you. Hope it helps. Good Luck.

Airline policy rules unfortunately. Consider shipping the excess via an overnite service (UPS ?) and insure same .
