What to wear and bring to Paris?

How to pack for a 7-Day trip to Paris?

  • I don't travel at all and this is my first time traveling during the winter season. I have no idea how cold it'll be and I need some help here! I'll be flying off in a week's time. I'll be doing quite a lot of walking in Paris. How many layers do I need to wear? Do I need to bring a lot of clothes? What kind of shoes do I need? What do I need to survive in a cold country? And, how are the expenses like in Paris? Help!

oh perfect, i did exactly the same thing, except for 2 weeks. ok it's pretty damn cold. i dunno what you're used to, but paris in winter hovers around 0 or just a few degrees above. snow is quite rare. don't layer too much cuz then wen you go into museums and whatnot you'll be boiling. i'd say a long sleeve shirt, a sweater, and a good jacket should be fine. and bring scarves and thin gloves. i sometimes wished i had a hat, but i survived without it. comfortable walking shoes. i personally wore adidas runners which worked fine. my girlfriend wore heels and regretted it. paris is damn expensive. a cup of coffee in a little cafe will cost you anywhere between 2-10 euros. but make sure you spend money on all the touristy spots eg top level of eiffel tower, climbing the arc the triomphe, etc cuz it's all worth it!! i think paris is absolutely amazing.

I went to Paris in January and it wasnt any colder than I experience living in DC, around 30-40's. You won't need to many layers because you will warm up while walking, too much clothing will cause you to sweat and over heat. I stuck to long sleeved shirts, jeans and a coat that was warm but not too bulky. Also a hat, scarf and gloves are a must. They can be removed if you get too warm but come in handy when visiting places like the orsay museum or eiffel tower where you may have to wait in long lines in the cold. You won't need a lot of clothes. I would say a couple of warm pants and a few shirts to mix and match and maybe an outfit for the nightclub. Also make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes, nothing fancy. Things are quite expensive in Paris. Some of the things we did to cut expenses were to stick to public transportation. We took the RER from the airport and transferred to the metro to get to our hotel, was cheaper than a taxi. Also Air france has a free shuttle to certain areas of the city from the airport. Make sure you get a metro pass and use that to get around. For dining we went to the grocery and stocked our room with things for a quick breakfast and snacks to carry with us. We also ate at a few donor kebab stands and tried restaurants that had a prix fixe menu. Shopping can be really expensive so I would suggest that you get all your sightseeing out of the way before focusing on shopping, Galeries Lafayette is huge and pricey. Also set aside an amount that you plan to spend on shopping and try not to go over it.
