try to speak french when you speak to the locals...they will appreciate it and respect you more.

You will need an plug socket adaptor, you will find one at the docks shop or on the ferry if you do not have one, the volts are the same as GB 220/240v, some aspirins and any medicines you normally take,a phrase book is handy but do not think it will be 100% as most French people do not talk like they do in the book and of coarse your accent an pronunciation will distort any thing you have read, and of coarse if they do understand it is pretty likely you will not understand the answer they give you as it will not be the one you have in the book, Try to explain without shouting and getting aggressive as a lot of tourists do, ( shouting louder does not mean the understand ) as for the young people, they willl be the ones who are most likely to speak English even if they do look odd to you. Oh and do not speed on the motorways as they are really stuffed with automatic radars and the French police wil not let you go until you have paid the fine, as for drinking and driving the limit is low at 6 Mg per litre and the fines are enormous. They also do off the ferry checks sometimes which means if you drink on the ferry and you are stopped, you will not be able to move for 24 hours. Oh and one last thing If you have an accident DO NOT sign a pink form that is a declaration of responsibility

a hire car must have a 1st aid kit and a road site incident kit... that is a legal requirement in france. Other than taking a thick skin for putting up with them... nothing else really... PS - Dont let on you speak french, cos all they end up doing is speaking at 10000 miles an hour.
