When do I use TSA locks for my luggage?

While traveling, do you use locks on your luggage or do you leave it unlocked so customs can search it?

  • I'm not referring to carry-on luggage, which they can request you to open at any time; I'm talking about your stowed baggage.

  • Answer:

The best thing to do is get a TSA approved lock for your suitcase. You should be able to buy one any place that sells luggage. This lock can be opened be baggage screeners using a special tool, and it allows you to lock your checked baggage.

If someone wants to steal my stuff, go for it. I'm sorta in need of some new clothes. Hmmmm maybe I should encourage it. Perhaps when I board that plane spring break I'll advertise on the side of my suitcase. "I AM NOT LOCKED. GO FOR IT!" Do you think insurance would cover that? Food for thought *shrugs*.

personally- i travel very light. i also cram-n-carry on, so it's not a concern for me now...maybe someday when i 'grow up'!...naaah! is this a disguised way to ask about the illusion of security (a lock that can be broken) vs. the unknown? (no lock at all...but is it secure?) none of your innocuous questions are as they appear on the surface, are they?! i love it when i'm right! now you have me trying to get inside your head again, macsteed...perhaps i'm thinking too much...time for bed.

Yes always. Not only because of someone opening my luggage when I am not with it, but because the zippers can find there way open on their own as well. The best thing to do is either get a lock that has a combination, then tell the person at security the code. They will write it on your bag claim ticket, or id tag or something in case they need to open it. The absolute be way to go is to get a TSA approved lock. This way only you or a member of of the TSA can get it. They have a universal key/device that can open these locks, without having to break them. You can buy the regular key locks, because they are inexpensive and it's not the end of the world if you have to replace them, but is best if you can keep your luggage protected at all times. I travel several times a month and have never had my luggage checked yet. But I still like to be on the safe side with the locks.

lock it, absolutely lock it. I'd rather have the inconvenience of waiting to have my bag searched or whatever, than have stuff stolen from it - or even worse, have drugs stuffed into your luggage by bag handlers...

I've locked my luggage, and it comes back with no lock and clearly rummaged through. I've not locked my luggage, and it appears untouched...I've had things stolen from both locked and unlocked luggage. I think that the locks that are small enough for luggage are so wimpy, that it really is a false sense of security. If someone wants in your bag (to look for "bombs" or to steal) then they will, regardless of your lock.
