Do I need a passport to cross the Mexican border by car?

  • I go there every summer, and I remember they were good with just checking birth certificates on the way back in to the US. I am just not sure because I heard they were changing some laws. Also would minors need one?

    Everyone 16 and over must have a passport. Kids 15 and under may use their birth certificates.

my husband is from mexico and he said you can get over there with out a passport.but they make you pay to drive ur car over there.but you do need a passport to come back.

Yes, you will need one to re-enter the U.S. You can also apply for a passport card that is made just for people like you. It can not be used though for international travel. The steps for applying in person as shown in the link below are very similar to what you need to get a passport card instead of a passport.
