Anyone recommend Riviera Maya in Mexico?
-
My soon to be husband and I are planning on going to the El Dorado Seaside Suites in Riviera Maya, Mexico, on our honeymoon. Anybody recommend? Any nice places to go around there?

Answer:
I was at my friend's wedding at El Dorado Seaside Suites in September 09... it was very quiet... and most of the visitors there were quite old, and thus music at the night club/bar catered to this type of audience. (Good for you if you are age 40+). If you are looking for a relaxing resort, with verrrrry yummmmy food, then I would recommend this place. Lots of opportunities to go on "excursions" too. Although my friend was married here-- I personally chose not to stay here, EXCEPT for the wedding day... as it was TOO expensive... I ended up staying instead in the shopping district and little town of Playa del Carmen... 20 minute cab ride from El Dorado Seaside... there are SO MANY NICE cheaper non-exclusive hotels to choose from RIGHT IN Playa del Carmen, that go from $10-$50 a night!!!! Plus, staying "in the town" of Playa Del Carmen- the beaches are comparable in beauty and quality to that of El Dorado -and, you are right next to shopping, nightlife, and even all the places that sell daily excursions- like to Mayan Ruins or Cenotes (caves w/ swimming) ! You can take the ADO Airconditioned Charter Buses in Playa del Carmen to many places... like the Tulum Ruins, or even Cancun. It's only 8 USD to take this bus to/from Playa del Carmen and the airport. All shops accept dollars or pesos. When you get there, you will realize there is a ton, ton, ton to do in the Riviera Maya-- lotsa places to see!!! Whether it's snorkling, scuba diving, visiting the islands of Conzumel or Isla Mujeres (port in Cancun), daily excursions to the ruins of Coba, Chitzen Itza, or Tulum... just a lot to do! The Oceans of Cancun have a gorgeous deep Aqua Blue look, versus in the Mayan Riviera, which is a lighter blue, and a little more greenish tint. But still Nice. =) However, if you have a chance to take a day-trip to Cancun, to at least walk the beaches- or even go jet skiing on the ocean-- THAT is a romantic thing to do! It'll take you a day to walk the ENTIRE beach strip of hotels and hotels... you start at the Public Beach at the south end of the strip, then make your way north or south... very relexing...and a beautiful long walk for hours and hours... (and you can bail whenever you want)... have fun! Mexico is AMAZING!!!! No mosquitos either, which was GREAT!!!

You will really enjoy the area. Although I've never stayed at the ElDorado, I've heard good things. There are so many things to do. Here are a few examples: Xcaret- an eco water park with a nice zoo, underground river (cenote) to float in. Tulum Ruins- The mayans built their community right on a cliff overlooking the sea. It's very nice especially if you like history. Get a guide or take a tour that visits Tulum in the AM and Xelha- another eco park, in the afternoon. Day Trip to the Island of Cozumel- The ferry leaves every 30-60 minutes depending on what time of year you are going. You will find some of the best scuba and snorkeling in the world in this area. The island is fun to poke around too. Rent a jeep and go to the east side. There are miles and miles of undisturbed beach with an occasional bar scattered among them. Bob Marley's is a fun bar. Cenote Diving- If you're a diver, the cenotes offer a different perspective The town of Playa del Carmen has a plethora of nightclubs, restaurants, and lots of shopping. Be sure to walk down 5th Avenue. There is so much more, deep sea fishing, zip lines, a jungle tour on ATV's. Check with the concierge at your hotel for more. And have a fun honeymoon!

You are going to love it there, although I am staying at that the El Dorado Maroma because it's smaller and more intimate of a setting (Seaside Suites is fairly large). You will enjoy either. If you're looking to save a little money I recommend booking at Deals2Cancun.com. You get a 10% cash back rebate when you get home, which will really add up, especially on a luxury vacation! I also recommend splurging on the swim-up suites! You won't regret it, I'm heading to El Dorado Maroma in December and it will be amazing. I'd recommend snorkeling in Cozumel if you're up for something like that!
