How many passports can you have on border crossing?

Passports needed for crossing border in car?

  • If I'm going to cross the border in car do I need my passport already? I have my California ID & original birth certificate but I don't know if that would be enough.

  • Answer:

Yes, you would need your passport or at least the passport card. It is now a law that to go into either Canada or Mexico a passport is needed.

You DO NOT need a passport to cross the border and return from Mexico as long as you do so before June 1, 2009. At that time veryone will need a passport. You have enough for now, provided you are an American or Canadian by birth,

Right now, you need a photo I.D. AND birth certificate.

Here is a link for your vehicle requirements into Mexico. http://www.rollybrook.com/vehicle_permits.htm Here is the link for you passport question. http://travel.state.gov/passport_cal/passport_travel_requirements.php Since you don't have a passport than look past the list at Alternative Accapted documents and you will see you only need your drivers license. This changes June next year. There will be a backlog of applicants then so Mikey suggests you apply now to avoid the long delays next summer. But for now your fine.

Not so sure about the passport I thought you did need it BUT i am sure they require your permit to cross, it costs 25 doll. and you just fill it out and they stamp it and usually give it to you for 6 months.
