How strenuous is the (walking) tour in Mexico's Chichen Itza?
-
I've just discovered Mexico's beautiful Chichen Itza site (here on the internet). I want to see more of it in person, but, I don't think I could handle the walk (I am slightly anemic and often tired, though I'm able to walk about 2 miles non-stop before getting exhausted). How much walking takes place during a guided tour vs. a self walking tour?

Answer:
No problem, as it is a lot of stop and start. Take water with you. You'll be taking pictures. My wife and I self-toured Chichen Itza on our honeymoon in 2006. I'm a heart patient. I had no problem at all. The only hassle was the multitude of vendors pushing their junk at you, "One dollar, Señor, very nice" every twenty feet. Hell, we drove (okay, I drove, because my wife can't drive stick) from Tulum to Chichen Itza, toured the site in about two and a half hours, had lunch (avoid the Chichen Itza Pizza) there, and then hopped back in the car and drove to Coba (on the way back to Tulum). We rented bicycles and toured that site, climbed a pyramid at the end, and then drove back to Tulum. I was tired at the end of the day, but fine.

If you can walk two miles, I would think you could handle the walking tour. The site is pretty spread out, but it's fairly flat, and the tour stops a lot so the guide can talk about each building or area you visit. If you do a lot of climbing up and down the ruins, you'll wear yourself out a lot faster, but you should be able to stay mostly on the ground and do fine.

Very easy, even for seniors. You will get there by van or bus so walking is easy.

The walk is not too strenuous especially since they do not let you climb the pyramid anymore. That climb was brutal! The terrain around the pyramid is generally flat, but your tour guide might take you through the forest. Also keep in mind the time of year you want to visit because it can get pretty hot and humid out there. Drink plenty of water and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
