Where is the best place in Mexico to go for spring break?

  • My family wants to go to mexico for spring break but we don't know where. Me and my sister are freshman in college and we have a 14 year old little brother. We want to go somewhere fun where we can meet other college kids but our parents can relax. We are looking at Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, or whatever. What are some nice resorts? Or would we be better of doing a cruise? I know this is a lot but we can basically do whatever we want, but we need to decide pretty soon. Any help would be appreciated :)

I studied abroad for a year in Mexico and nothing ever happened to me. I even got lost in the city one night and I didn't even get mugged. People who say that the government is unstable or that the drug cartels will get to you have never really even traveled to Mexico nor lived there. The drug war and cartel problems are near the border and more than likely if anything were to happen to you would be you get overcharged for things. Worse things have happened to me in the United States that being abroad. Now onto your question Acapulco, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta are extremely expensive and overcrowded. There are many beautiful beaches in Mexico, the Beaches of Oaxaca are gorgeous, Los Cabos in Baja California is a great kept secret, and the state of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche also have excellent weather and beautiful waterfalls. Mazatlan is also a well kept secret. Mexico has a lot to offer and is no more dangerous that any city here, people are courteous and always willing to help. I hope you have a great trip!

I have been in Acapulco since the 2 nd of December and there is No violence downtown or in the tourist hotel areas. Not one foreign tourist has been injured or killed as a result. There are now millions here and I just got back from visiting a friend that has two restaurants on the beach here and the crowds are unbelievable. People are partying as usual. The news stations are now reporting 100% ocupancy I had forgotten how vibrant this city is. All the violence that you and the other poster have seen is what is going on primarily in Juarez. You don`t here much about anywhere else in fact. Tijuana , Nuevo Laredo. Reynosa and Matamoros have calmed down and the Government is clearly winning the war. Most Cartel leaders have been killed or incarcerated. I asked a cop friend of mine that gaurds a Casa De Cambio if he was nervous and he laughed and said 'They are punks fighting over territory" The gang warfare is going on around the outskirts and they are targeted killings.

Cancun could be a very good choice --- just choose a more upscale, family friendly hotel and then the college kids can hit the nightclubs and mix it up with other college students at night, but mom and dad won't be inconvenienced by the loud party crowd (who tend to favor the lower end of the big mega all-inclusive resort --- like the Oasis). Ixtapa is a good, family friendly destination, but Puerto Vallarta would be a better spot to meet fellow spring breakers. Playa del Carmen might be another good choice for both the family friendly element and the spring break party element. Hope it helps!

Cancun is consistently the busiest place for spring break. There are people claiming "no evidence against tourists in acapulco" well that's simply false. It's not safe there - I wouldn't personally go that's for sure. Puerto Vallarta is also fairly safe. The fact that we are discussing safety over amenities in and of itself is a problem. I mean...why WOULD you go someplace where it might be a concern? That's foolish. The cartels aren't targeting tourists, it's the spray of bullets that you can't count on not hitting bystanders. It is in Mexico. Let it rest a year, stay in the USA. Book South Padre Island, Texas; book Panama City Beach, FL. Book the Bahamas, go skiing in Colorado, etc. Chad

Cancun...and don't listen to people poo pooing Mexico. The tourist areas are safe...even safer then Chicago. Look at it this way...would you cancel your vacation in Florida because there was a war in California? THAT'S how seperated places like Cancun are from their bs war. Acapulco would be cool too. I personally prefer to make my own schedule when I travel so I don't much like cruises but if you don't want to worry about staying in Mexico a cruise would be the thing to do (since you'd sleep there instead) Cancun is a hot spot for young people. The resorts I like best are Bahia Principes, Iberostars, and Barcelos which should have a hotel in most any of the towns you are searching

Right now, I wouldn't go anywhere in Mexico. The Mexican government is at war with the drug gangs. The drug gangs seem to be winning. People going to Mexico right now run the risk of either being shot, or held for ransom. Sometimes, it's the police that demand a ransom. It happened to my friend's sister even though she is hispanic. There are no good guys and bad guys in Mexico. There's only bad and worse. If you insist on going, I would recommend taking a cruise. That probably would be much safer.

I have been all over Mexico and Acapulco for Spring Break is a really happening place specially to meet other College students you can also try Cancun that place is really nice and it will fit both your parents needs and yours. But either place is good another place you can visit is Cabo San Lucas but Acapulco is more the party spot to be during spring break.

Los Cabos, definately. You can do everything or nothing. Everyone will have a great time.

Right now is not a good time to travel to Mexico, our government advices against it, and for good reason. It is to unstable at the moment, even for tourist. BUT if you absolutely plan to go, you need to try the lesser know beaches. They are much cleaner and have great entertainments. Try Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. They have 5 star hotels, great night life such as clubmed, senor frogs, among some that I remember. In Ixtapa there is a place that you can swim with dolphins, and if you go to Playa Linda, you can take a short boat ride to an island that is the bomb. Cristal clear water, snorkling, horseback riding and much more. Try researching the area you won't regret it, among those to cities are about 9 major beaches that are not polluted.
