How many passports can you have on border crossing?

When are they going to start asking for passports when crossing the Mexico border?

  • And also what happens when they ask and you don't have it but you have your birthcertificate?

    You will need the passport for land travel effective June 1, 2009. What happens if you just have a birth certificate? I assume that they still will let Americans into their country. The same happened when they started to ask for the birth certificate as proof of citizenship last year, that you could still get in without it. It may be possible that you will have to undergo a more thourough immigration check being without a passport or may even have to pay a fine after a certain convertion period. Right now you can still cross the land border with a birth certificate, in June of this year you will need a passport to cross. If you dont have a passport after that, a birth certificate will NOT be suffcient to get you across. If you are flying in, you need a passport now.

You have to have a passport now . You might be refused entry or re-entry into the US

This is just what I've heard from a friend who just went down there.... they are already asking for passports at the TJ/San Diego crossing, but you can still get through once or twice with your ID and birth certificate. I've heard the date that passports are a necessity is June 19, 2009. This is just for walking/driving across, it might be totally different for flying in.
