What's the safest way to get to Monterrey, MX from SAT alone?

What are some ways to get to Monterrey, MX from SAT airport safely alone? Renting a car is an option. I can drive however far from SAT I need to (including the whole way to Monterrey). However, is that safe? Is it safe to drive the 3 hours from Laredo down to Monterrey? What about busses? Any ideas?

Answer:
Renting a car may not be an option. Rental car companies generally do not allow their cars to cross into Mexico. Buses are the best way. There are several bus companies that go direct from San Antonio to Monterrey (with stops in Laredo and/or Nuevo Laredo). Americanos is generally quite good as is Turimex Internacional.

it is probably ok to drive or bus. travel during daylight hours only. have all of your papers in order. Personally I would take the bus.
