Best way to Monterrey?
-
Dear Ya! community, I'd like to get to Monterrey for about a week, and would like a car while I'm there. It seems like flying across the border is very expensive due to the tax. I was wondering whether it would be better to fly to Laredo then rent a car and drive over the border. I'd probably be wanting a car in Monterrey anyway. I've read you have to pay some kind of 'Mexico Insurance' if you drive an Avis vehicle over the border into Mexico. Is it possible to cross the border into New Laredo and rent there? Or should I just get a bus to Monterrey (which seem cheap) and rent there? Anyone done this kind of thing before? Thanks! ~Nick

Answer:
Fly directly to Monterrey and rent the car at the Airport, if not cheaper it will be more convinient and safer. I would not drive to Laredo and loose the extra day that I could spend with my friends.

The first question I have is have you ever driven in Mexico before. Driving in Mexico, specifically Monterrey is a huge difference than here in the United States. Can I ask why you are deciding to go to Monterrey. I have traveled threw out Mexico to many cities and regions. I love it so much. The ONLY place that I have had a bad experience with, and the ONLY place that I could not stand would be Monterrey. I visited there only this past month. Also where are you flying from, that will be a big consideration when deciding on the cheapest way to travel. If you do decide to take your own vehicle I would give you a remider that in some certain circumstances people are made to wait for a three day wait period waiting on a permit to drive into Mexico when going futher than a border town. Hope you have a good trip and any good you find in Monterrey then please let me know where I can try to enjoy it.

We love Monterrey. Not only have we been there dozens of times we were married there! Honestly, Monterrey is a crazy, confusing place to drive and the cabs are extremely inexpensive. I would take the bus to Monterrey (pay the extra couple of pesos for the ejecutivo lines--very nice) and take taxis when you get to the city. If you do rent a car, either US or Mexico side, yes, you do need Mexico insurance.

I drove my car from Atlanta to Monterrey...you have to put down a $500 deposit at the border on your credit card to get your car into the country. When you return to the states, they refund all but about $150. Also, you have to pay a $35 toll on the road to Monterrey. I think it would be cheaper to rent the car once you arrive in Monterrey. Car rental rates are much cheaper in Mexico. If you can drive in D.C, you can drive in Mexico.
