  Mostly cheap labor. Many people in Nuevo Laredo cross the bridge every day to work on the Texas side of the border at wages lower than Texans would stand for. It used to be that the cheap shopping in Nuevo Laredo attracted many people to the area, which helped both sides of the border. But then the drug violence escalated and stores and restaurants suffered. But drug violence has decreased recently, because the Coahuila and Gulf Cartels who had been killing each other now have a peace accord--the killing has stopped and the economies of both towns are improving.
