Is Tourism in Mexico really that bad?

What is the nicest area for tourism in Mexico?

  • I'm planning a trip to Mexico for this summer, and was wondering what the best/nicest area was in Mexico. Any input helps.

  • Answer:

If it is "Sun & Sand then almost all of coastal Mexico is the best. The east side of the Gulf of Mexico from Veracruz is not very popular until one gets to South Padre island. The Yucatan peninsula is very popular these days and attracts approximately 25% of the tourist population. Cancun gets an estimated 10% alone. The entire west coast from Rosarito to Guatemala including the Sea of Cortes by Sea is nothing short of breathtaking and collectively attracts most tourists to Mexico. If it is 5 star resorts and culture the Yucatan peninsula has a lot to offer with all the Mesoamerican Ruins to visit. There is no time to be bored during a two week vacation. The best time to do the meseta or antiplano (Plateau) is of course during the summer months where it is cooler and dryer. There are too many great places up there to mention.

One of the best areas to visit in Mexico is the Yucatan peninsula. There is a real variety of experiences from the Caribbean Sea resorts of Cancún and Puerto Costa Maya, to the ancient Mayan ruins and colonial towns.

You didn't mention any of your interests. . . If it's the Mayan Ruins you enjoy, then Tulum, Chitzen Itza or Palanque would be 4 U If it's a laid back beach community, I would recommend Playa del Carmen - Stay @ Mom's Hotel momshotel.com Cancun is too much of a tourist hussle. . .

if you go with small kids Ixtapa, Guerrero is a great place, it has Beautiful beaches and it is not as expensive as Cancun and not as crowded as Acapulco. I think that Acapulco has a great night life but their beaches are not as Beautiful as Ixtapa, which is more for relaxing. If you are looking for more adventures and less beaches you may try Michoacan, where you can climb the volcano (paricutin), visit Patzcuaro, etc...

Please post your interests, Beach? Clubbing? Ruins? Colonial Mexico? My personal favorite is the Bajio region, which stretches from Guadalajara in the west, to Queretaro in the east. My favorite town in this region is Tangancicuaro Michoacan. It is a sleepy town that is almost unknown to foreign tourists. Its basically the "real" Mexico experience. I enjoy the simple pleasures of open air dining and hanging out at the town square, its a good place to just have a lazy time.

Personally, my favorite is Guadalajara. It is a beautiful, grand and clean metropolitan area that really has it all. I think it is one of the safer "bigger" cities in Mexico. You have rich history, majestic cathedrals and many museums. Near by you have Los Altos de Jalisco which is a beautiful region of Jalisco near GDL. You have ecotourism near by and nice water parks. Chapala is also near by which is a large scenic lake they have cleaned up recently. Oh and Zapopan too!

I have a membership with Palace Resorts in the Riviera Maya at their five star all inclusive resorts and they have some really cool promotions going on now. Check them out at www.palaceresorts.com and their elite resort at www.leblancsparesort.com. If you're interested, let me know and I'll let you know what the discounted rate is for me. I can book your reservations but you pay them directly. The only thing I get out of it is a free week to use for my family. That's the incentive to buy a membership. Also, there is no seminar or tour that you have to commit to for this. The place is really awesome. We usually stay at the Aventura Spa Resort.
