I am from the Uk and I was once told Mexico is safer them the USA in many respects. Is this true? If so why do so many Mexicans immigrate to the USA each year? There is nothing wrong with living in a different country from your birth as many people do these days. I am asking out of interest rather them think they should not live there.

Answer:
Great question. Hard to answer! First, I'm mexican, living and answering from México. I'm not interested on migrate to USA or anywhere else, my life here is very good. But, you must know that Mexico is, in general, a poor country; although there are some areas as rich as Europe or USA, some others are as poors as Africa! Many people NEED to earn some money to survive. Those are some migrants; but not all. Some other (many in my area) go to USA 'cause they can earn more money there, even working as illegals, than here. They are doing the worst jobs, those the citizen don't want; they are beeing paid about 7 or 8 dollars per hour. Here in México, the regular paid is about 1 or 2 dollars per hour in the same kind of jobs. This last is important, because in specialized work the paid is virtually the same as in USA; in fact, there are many foreigners wotking in México and earning more money than in USA or in Europe.

There are more jobs, paying better money, in the US than there is in Mexico. To the Us employers, it's cheaper labor and for the Mexicans, it's better money to send home to support their families.

Your question lacks an accurate premise. I don't know who is making a claim that it is safer one place than another. Safer for whom? Criminals? Bank tellers? Drug dealers? Politicians? School children? Rarely have I heard anything sillier than to say that "it is a known fact" that Mexico's presidents are all assassinated. In the last 200 years we have endured more presidents and presidential candidates/public figures killed/attempts in the United States than in Mexico. John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., George Wallace, and Ronald Reagan; compared to one president and one candidate in Mexico. I live in Mexico. In my opinion, if you are a law-abiding citizen with no involvement in criminal activities, you are equally safe in either country. If you break the law in Mexico, the consequences are more dire. If you are involved with criminals or criminal activities, then it can be more dangerous. I think it is safer to be a drug dealer in the USA than in Mexico. Mexico lived under one-party rule for the first 70 years since the Revolution and their modern government. So a lot of laws and practices were not closely examined. That is changing now, but there have only been two presidential administrations with a change in party... so some things change slowly. Some practices that started innocently turned in to corruption... absolute power corrupts absolutely. Many of the crimes reported taking place in Mexico relate to specific groups and circumstances. The recent battles against the drug cartels affect very few in a country of 21 million, yet the media treats it like there is blood in the streets. That more closely resembles the USA when Al Capone ruled Chicago... not Mexico. For all it's faults, the USA is still the land of equality and opportunity. It is not only Mexicans that want to come to the USA, people from all over the world come. But as the economy in Mexico changes, fewer people will leave. HIstorically, immigrants from all around the world follow jobs. Historically, America is the land of opportunity... opportunity = jobs. Another major difference with Mexicans who come to the USA, is that many of them come here to work and fully intend to return. That is lost in all the immigration and anti-illegal immigration hype.

Just because it's safer, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a better quality of life in Mexico. Wages may still be less for instance, or some people may simply prefer a different lifestyle.

Being a former American living here in Mexico, I will tell you the facts. Mexico is safer than the USA. Alot safer. Guns in the hands of the public here in Mexico is illegal, drug use is alot lower, crime is alot lower. There should be a Travel Alert for travelers to the USA just on those points alone. Mexicans go the the USA to work. That work supports the Ameican way of life and economy more than the average American knows. If it weren't for the hard working Mexicans in the USA, the Americans would be in alot deeper trouble. The American public should be greatful for those Mexicans and the jobs that they do for long hours and little money. Nobody in the USA would work the long hours or as hard as a Mexican in the USA. Actually, there are millions of unemployed Americans that say there are no jobs available and collect money from the U.S. Government weekly as the hard working Mexican works a few blocks away. Go figure.

Mexico is not safer than the US, there is far more petty crime and the police force is largely ineffective. People emigrate to the US for economic opportunities, there are far better jobs and ability to acquire goods and property in the US than in Mexico

purely for economic reasons, the very poor here usually have a better life over there. they will make enough money to build a home and then move back. if you are middle class or better you have a MUCH higher standard of living in México than the jewsa. we have absolutely no desire to live there.

I haven't ever heard Mexico as being safer than the USA, it's a great country and all, but the US is pretty tightly guarded. I live in a pretty small town and we always have at least 8 police patrolling at once, they keep us pretty safe. Plus, forensic science is so advanced here, people just give up trying to commit crime in most cases. Also, we've never fought a war on our own soil, sept for the earlier wars against britain and ourselves, and if we have, the government keeps it tightly locked away from us or covers it up with propaganda, which honestly, I rather like.

IT is safer as long as you do not live in Mexico city or on the border. Those are the dangerous places. But all the other is safe. They migrate to the US for work. Faster, higher pay, and more jobs.
